Red Creek in decent shape on July 1. Still a little mud on the first couple creek crossings, but the upper downhill is perfect.

4 down trees through the whole loop. One on Spooky, then I can't remember exactly the rest.

Spooky and Corral are riding really well.

The Dead Cow trail is fantastic. Some wonderful soul has been in there and chain- sawed several trees that were across the trail THANK YOU!!! There were just a few boggy spots to walk, but overall the trail is great considering all the moisture we have had in June. Sheeps Bridge (Putt Putt) trail is buffed out and wonderful of course. Just one wet, muddy spot to walk. ENJOY!

All Trails on the North side of the road are open and great! The new re-route on Bovine keeps things alot drier than in the past. New bridges on Shark's Belly are fantastic. Just a few logs that need to be cut- on Shark's Belly and one large on on the two track connecting the top of Channel Lock to Sodbuster. One old log bridge on Probation is down from three logs to one- so use caution.

Aspen Trails are good - even after all this rain and snow in the past week. Not even that muddy except for a mile out from the north trail head. Awesome for trail running, hiking and one down tree on the north end of trail that mt bikers have to look out for.

One Wed. the 26th rode Bovine up then at intersection took ATV track over to Southbound to avoid the still wet trail leading down into the north facing woods. Unfortunately some horse people had ridden that section. Southbound and the double track at the bottom only had three small snow banks to walk through; otherwise mostly dry and tacky.

Perfect tacky dirt on Bovine, Channel Lock, almost all of Southbound but you cant climb back to the saddle on the 2-track. still feet of snow there. You can only get a couple hundred feet into Shark's Belly before the snow. Hopefully this coming warm weather clears alot of that snow out

Still 12 to 24 inches of snow on the north slopes of the trail. South facing and open areas are muddy. 1/3 of the trail is still under snow. One large aspen across the trail on the first 1/8 mile when coming from the North Trail head. Won't be mtn biking the trail for a few weeks it looks like, but it was okay to hike or trail run if you go early while the snow is crusty. Come on summer!

Many thanks to all the grooming volunteers, Nick and Tim, and the board for a very good winter of excellent ski trails. Stepping up the schedule in Teton Canyon was much appreciated and well used, a nice complement to Targhee's unfortunate budget/grooming cutback. Nordic skiing has come along way in this valley in 8 years!!!

If you haven't already ridden this great trail this summer, you can enjoy it "downfall free" and riding better than I have ever seen it in 14 years! A nice 9 mile loop for after work is up "Spooky"- and down Corral Creek to the sheep driveway and then UP Red Creek to the junction with Corral Creek. The new switchbacks created on June 25 trail day by the volunteers (with great leadership from Scott and the USFS crew) ride like a dream! Up or down hill it is absoulutely rideable. The creek crossings that remain are all "managable" and many are rideable. Chris Erickson has done wonders on cutting out all those downfalls at the top. And the downhill on the Corral creek side is sheer bliss! Ride in either direction, but I prefer the long SMOOTH downhill of Corral Creek. If you had given up on this trail years ago, try it again now! It is a whole new experience!

Thanks to the FS crew and the Saturday TVTAP trail day, the reroute is in and really improves the ride, getting rid of two of the more heinous creek crossings. Check out the engineering on the switchbacks on this new section! Also cut the last log across the trail, as of 7-25 the whole loop is timber free! Ride it up people! It is actually not as overgrown as some years.

Spooky Trail is in fine shape. Only one dead fall log just a few hundred yards from the trail head. Thanks Chris Erickson- I imagine you helped saw a few of those logs! The Red Creek crossing is running very high- use the log "bridge" and walk your bike, is my advice. The trail cat crew was in working on the two track the day I was there and getting rid of the many muddy spots, where water was pooling at the big check dams, but other than that the ride is great! Scott Bossell said they were heading to Piney Pass to work on the ATV trail, but they were using the Cat along the way to improve some of the worst mud pits. The Sheep have been driven in to this region, so beware of the sheep dogs!

July 11, 2009 We mountain biked up Millcreek from the trailhead on Teton Canyon Road. The cows are now in full force along this route, but the trail is in very nice shape. Just a few very bumpy spots near the top where the cows have walked and punched holes on the trail in wet conditions. (Or we can blame in on moose ha ha) There was no downfall, but we did not venture on to Cold Springs since it is likely still pretty wet in there.

Beautiful morning to ride up Mail Cabin and over to Mike Harris. We cleared a good amount of small downed logs/ trees out of the trail, but there are a few big logs that were too big- a chainsaw or wood saw would be good. Trail is a bit overgrown in places, but no mud. Flowers are incredible.

The hike-a-bike up Mail Cabin next to Super Bowl is still brutal. We could certainly use a reroute in there.

The mud holes Lynne refers to are really muddy, not even close to drying out. I think they're going to need some log/bridge work to be sustainable. Many of the corners in that same area are rutted from dirt bike traffic as well, but they could be buffed out pretty quickly.

Ditto what Dave said. Sidewinder is really fun on a 5" bike, and the Ricks basin loop is in great shape. We rode down Mill creek as well and it's mostly in good shape. One middle section is more rutted than in the past and could use some work.

On Sunday July 5th, we rode horseback up Mahogany Creek to Elk Flats. The lower section of the trail is in superb shape. The new section that TVTAP built is wonderful on horseback and will be great for Mtn.bikes too. The 2nd re-route that we worked on for trail day is mostly complete, there is just a rocky outcrop only about 10 ft long on a knoll, that you may have to carry a bike. The horses went right over it. The top 1/3 of Mahogany, before it reaches the saddlejunction with the crest trail was rutted, muddy and had dirt bike tracks around a few spots. I hope we can get some re-routes done there to make it ridable and sustainable. But all the downfall is clear and the Forest service crews have cut MANY logs.

From the junction at the saddle up to Elk Flats is also mostly rideable on a bike, however there is one spot in the last treed area, before the open side hill to Elk Flats that had a big blow down. When we were there, some kind dirt bikers had two small chainsaws and were cutting an alternate route around the 15 ft tall blow down pile.
No snow on the trail even up in Elk flats. Go ride it!

Now for a note from Joanne LaBelle about Mahogany Creek and the reroutes from the first TVTAP trail day:
ust a quick thank you from the horseback trail users of TVTAP. We rode from the Mahogany creek trailhead up to Elk Flats yesterday. What a pleasure that trail is becoming. The two re-routes are just as nice for horses as they will be for Mtn bikes. We took a two pruning saws and did get some of the higher branches cleared that hit a horse rider in the face or chest, but that hikers and bikers don’t notice. Scott and his forest service crew, buffed out the new rock section we were building on trail day, and it is GREAT for horses. (thanks Scott!)

There is still plenty of work to be done on the top 1/3 of this route, but the bottom is just tremendous. So trail day in August up there again will be much needed. And by the way, if you are riding the crest trail, between the saddle where Mahogany hits the crest trail, up to Elk flats, there was a serious blow down pile, about 15 ft tall. Well yesterday, as we were riding it, two dirt bikers had small chain saws, and they cut a trail up and around this pile making it ride-able for us all. I wish I had gotten their names. It was impossible to cut where the original trail had been, in that one spot, but in another many of the bikers had just been riding around the logs where they could. (Scott, you probably have been up there, but there are quite a few dirt bike trails off thru the woods around deadfall on that section, that if you guys took in some big saws, could be eliminated.) These guys did their best, but they had very small chainsaws.

So go ride this trail!! With the forest service’s work on Mahogany, all the logs are cleared to the top! (the mud and ruts still remain on the top 1/4- but what can you do!) Scott and his crew have really been working in there I could tell.
